During June and July 2018 police forces across the Uk carried out on the spot roadside tests for drug driving. Shockingly, 57% tested for drug driving were found to be positive. Why such a large figure?
You are probably aware if they have a good drink in the evening, the alcohol would still be in your system the following morning. But did you know drug such as cannabis will remain in your blood for up to 2 weeks? Therefore a driver can be found guilty of drug driving two after taking cannabis. This applies even if your driving is not affected by the drug.
The law in the UK states that “It is illegal to drive if either you are unfit to do so because you’re on legal or illegal drugs.”
While you may be aware of the dangers of taking illegal drugs. Did you know that you can also be banned from driving for taking certain prescription drugs?
Medicine available from your GP for hayfever, flu and even joint pain can get you disqualified from driving. Here is a list of medication which can get you banned from driving:
amphetamine, eg dexamphetamine or selegiline
clonazepam
diazepam
flunitrazepam
lorazepam
methadone
morphine or opiate and opioid-based drugs, eg codeine, tramadol or fentanyl
oxazepam
temazepam
However, the advice from the NHS is always read the label. If in doubt, ask your pharmacist.
If you taking medicine which affects your driving, either don’t drive or ask your GP for alternative medicine.
