Join me as I have a litical gathering Northern Ireland explore why the country is being held ransom by the DUP
Whats thier deal: • Essentially it goes back to their name 'unionist' they are FULLY AGAINST the idea of a united #ireland and therefore don't want Northern Ireland to have ANY special considerations when it comes to #Brexit #DUP
Obviously this is illogical considering #NorthernIreland is the only place in the #uk that has an open border with an #EU country #DUP
Whats the whole backstop thing about • A key part of the Brexit negotiations was about the border that separates Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
• The backstop is a position of last resort, to maintain an open border on the island of Ireland in the event that the UK leaves the EU without securing an all-encompassing deal.
• To the DUP, the backstop represented its worst fears come to life: regulatory differences meaning only NI would continue to follow some EU rules, no time limit and the ability to exit the backstop would need to be agreed jointly by the UK and EU.
