Special foods are a big part of the Japanese New Year's Holidays which run from about Jan 1st to 5th.
Toso (屠蘇), or o-toso, is spiced medicinal sake traditionally drunk during New Year celebrations in Japan.
Zōni, often with the honorific "o-" as o-zōni, is a Japanese soup containing mochi rice cakes. The dish is associated with prosperity and future success.
Osechi-ryōri is the main (御節料理 or お節料理) traditional Japanese New Year food and it comes in many varieties & price ranges. My set of four jubako boxes included 45 different items. Osechi started in the Heian Period (794-1185), so there's over 1000 years of this amazing & festive eating tradition bringing families together.
Today, modern foods such as sashimi and sushi are often eaten, as well as non-Japanese foods.
