Liverpool rule January window - but has Klopp missed opportunity?

It's right up there alongside all the great modern day football cliches: buying players in January can prove rather troublesome.  And Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is no different to almost every other Premier League manager in making clear the difficulty doing business halfway through the season.  “It is not about money in this situation, it is the winter transfer window," he said.  “Clubs are saying ‘No, we have half a year to go, we cannot find another player like this, we prefer to take money in the summer than a few pounds more in the winter than whatever’."    Those words were said back in 2017, when an inability to strengthen contributed to Liverpool slipping out of the FA Cup and League Cup and out of title contention.  Klopp knew he needed more players. The right ones, though, simply weren't available.  In the end, Liverpool were successful in clinching a top-four berth and Champions League qualification that began a momentum that now sees them four points clear at the top of the Premier League table.  And with the January transfer deadline once again approaching, supporters are pondering if the Reds are missing a trick by not bolstering their ranks ahead of the run-in. Twelve months later, it was the turn of Javier Mascherano and Alvaro Arbeloa.  The next year, Martin Skrtel. And in 2010, Maxi Rodriguez arrived.  All in January. All making significant contributions to Liverpool over the subsequent years.  Arguably the most notable mid-season arrival of the Premier League era came in 2011 when Luis Suarez was snapped up from Ajax.  That Andy Carroll also arrived on the same day for £35million underlined not all January purchases are bullet-proof, Fernando Morientes another misfire in 2005.    But in 2013 came arguably the Reds' most successful mid-season window when Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge arrived for a combined total of just £20.5m.  Liverpool have also done well when it comes to January sales, raking in £50m for Fernando Torres and an eye-watering £142m for Coutinho. Few would argue the Reds haven't done well out of either deal.  Virgil van Dijk's arrival 12 months ago underlined the huge impact the right signing can have on a team, both immediately and in the long term.  Liverpool's recent right-back injury crisis has left some supporters crying out for a new recruit, particularly with Nathaniel Clyne ha
