In its response to the two-judge bench, the Meghalaya government said that rescue operations started a day after the tragedy struck, that is on December 14.
Initially it was the SDRF personnel who were handling the operations. It is on December 24, almost 11 days later that NDRF and fire service personnel were rushed in.
The district administration has mentioned in its submission to the apex court that huge expenditure has been incurred in the rescue operation and till date most of the supplies and equipment has been brought in on credit from local petrol pumps. Even food has been brought in from the local suppliers on credit.
