BREXIT: MEP Etheridge claims EU stumbled on perfect solution for Brexit backstop stalemate

The European Commission may have accidentally "stumbled" on the perfect solution to put an end to months of debate over the Irish backstop with proposals for a new tracking system, Brexit Party MEP Bill Etheridge said at the European Parliament.

European Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc this week submitted to MEPs proposals for a new system allowing member states to combine electronic road tolls and information exchange to track drivers failing to pay road fees.

Brexit Party MEP Bill Etheridge welcomed the proposal, suggesting Ms Bulc had "stumbled" upon a functional resolution to the backstop stalemate looming over London and Brussels.

Addressing the European Commissioner, Mr Etheridge said: "We have here an electronic system, a single on-board unit that can go anywhere in the EU.

The Brexit Party politician praised Ms Bulc for her research as he suggested the Commissioner "may well go down in history" for helping find an alternative solution to the mechanism currently included in the Brexit withdrawal agreement to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland.

He continued: "It’s very similar technology to what would be required. Instead of looking for people to charge polls, you are looking at cross-border trade. We’ve just seen here there is no requirement for a toll booth or a hard border.
