Cancer is a deadly disease that’s caused by specific cells in the body reproducing uncontrollably, according to the NHS. These cancerous cells can destroy the healthy tissue surrounding them - including vital organs. More than a third of all people will develop cancer at some point in their lifetime. You could be at risk of cancer if you have these common flu symptoms. For example, having a runny nose could actually be a sign of nasal cavity and sinus cancer. The cancer affects the air-filled sacs that are distributed around several parts of the face - the paranasal sinuses. Early signs of nasal cavity and sinus cancer can be easily mistaken for other non-cancerous conditions, warned Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. “Early cancer symptoms that mimic common conditions of the sinuses include a nose bleed from one nostril, a blockage of a nostril, and a runny nose on one side,” it said. “Symptoms that can indicate an advanced cancer tumour are a persistent headache, and changes in vision or double vision.” Meanwhile, a sore throat could also be caused by a deadly tumour. Having a persistent sore throat could be caused by laryngeal cancer, said the NHS. The cancer affects the larynx - part of the throat that leads to the windpipe. “The main symptoms of laryngeal cancer include a persistent sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and a swelling in your neck. “Some people may also experience bad breath, breathlessness, a high-pitched wheezing noise when breathing, unexplained weight loss, or fatigue [extreme tiredness].” A simple cough could also be a sign of a deadly cancer, added the NHS. Seeing your doctor could save your life.” You should also never ignore diarrhoea that won’t go away, it added. Having looser stools than normal - that lasts longer than three weeks - could also be caused by bowel cancer. Speak to a doctor if you find yourself passing more stools than normal, or if you develop a stomach ache while emptying your bowels.
