FREE Guide: Start a Private Practice in Counseling:

Movo Lavalier Condenser Microphone (Lapel Mic):

Out of all the questions I hear from you, I’m most often asked about how I make my videos: what equipment I use, how I edit my videos, and how I go about structuring the process. In today’s video I’m going to show you how to make your own videos for FREE using a Mac computer.

This video is geared for therapists of all kinds, including psychologists, MFTs, LPCCs, social workers, and others in the clinical counseling field.

Welcome to Private Practice Skills! I’m Dr. Marie Fang, psychologist in private practice. I post videos offering tools I learned the hard way about starting and growing private practice so that you don’t have to.

Video is such a great tool. Whether you’re a therapist like me or not, it’s a great tool for sharing information and getting potential clients to get to know you a little bit. I absolutely support you giving it a shot!

So in today’s video I’m showing you how to make a video for FREE on a Mac computer. If you have a PC, stay tuned. In the future I will post a second video showing you how to make a video using a PC.

Supplies needed for this process:
-Camera - can be your smartphone. If you have a nice camera, feel free to use it!

-Mac Computer - You can do some minor edits using apps on your phone, but I highly recommend using a computer if you plan to make any edits.

-iMovie App - most Macs come with this downloaded. If you don’t have iMovie downloaded, you can find it in the app store.

Prep:
-I always suggest prepping in advance what you will share in your video before you hit record. Look for a topic you’re well-versed in and think of a way to break it down into quick tips or steps before you start recording. I write out a loose script before recording a video.

-Find good lighting. No need for special equipment! I suggest filming during the day and using natural light in your favor. Here’s what I look like on my iPhone when the light is behind me, but here’s how I look when the light is facing me. So much better, right?

-Place your camera/phone. No need for a tripod. If you’re using a smartphone, there are ways to set it up without a tripod. Just consider if you want vertical or horizontal orientation based on where you’ll be posting the video. Vertical is great for instagram, but horizontal is usually what we use for YouTube and most other platforms. Also be careful not to block the microphone on your camera.

Now it’s time to record! Feel free to do several takes if you need. You don’t have to get everything in one take.

Once you have your footage, upload it to your mac. I use airdrop with my iPhone but you can also just plug your phone into your laptop.

Once you’ve exported your video, you can upload it wherever you might like! Keep in mind that instagram posts have a maximum of 60 second videos. You can also upload to YouTube and embed on your website - a great way for people to get a sense of you and your brand right on your website.

If you do feel like getting fancy and you want an equipment upgrade, before jumping to an expensive camera, the best tip I can offer is to buy a small lapel mic. I’ll link below to the one I use. It’s affordable and makes a HUGE difference in the sound quality. And sound is more important than the video when making a video.

Give yourself lots of opportunity to practice. The biggest hurdle for most people is getting over the discomfort that comes with being on camera and listening to the sound of our voice. It will get easier with time!

I hope this video has inspired you to give video a try. If you do, let me know how it goes and I’d love to see your work!
