Mark Rutte says Britain will not enjoy a 'splendid isolation' in Brexit warning to EU
The Dutch Prime Minister warned European Union countries that they should learn “the chaos of Brexit” while delivering the speech at the University of Zurich. He also used the ‘future of Europe’ lecture to insist that Britain will not be able to cherry-pick from EU’s single market in the future. The speech was born out of an address given by Winston Churchill in September 1946, in which the British wartime prime minister called for a “United States of Europe” as a remedy to the Continent’s post-war plight. Delivering this year’s address, Mr Rutte said: "If the chaos of Brexit teaches us anything, it’s that there’s no such thing as splendid isolation."The single market is not a menu from which you can pick and choose...not for the UK in the Brexit negotiations."Europe has “become more prosperous, secured democratic than” Mr Churchill could “have ever dreamt back in 1946”, Mr Rutte said.
