Since steeplejacks often work hundreds of feet above the ground, it is necessary for them to be trained in rope rescue techniques in the event one of them is incapacitated on the job due to a medical condition or injury.

To that end, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and its Michigan counterpart, MiOSHA, mandate annual rope rescue training for MPSCS steeplejacks.

Capt. David Babcock of the Lansing Fire Department led the most recent training, conducted on June 26, 2018, in East Lansing, and also involving firefighters from Michigan Region 1 USAR (Urban Search and Rescue).
