Why Your Map May Be Lying To You | Displacement Of Detail

It is often said that by the time a map is available to use, it is out of date due to the "real-world moving on" since the data to create the map was gathered.

There may also be some 'built in inaccuracies' due to the challenge of trying to visualise important details and features in a cramped space on a map, this gives the perception that your map may be 'lying to you'.

This is often referred to as 'displacement' or 'displacement of detail' and is something I talk about in more detail in this video.

Regardless of whether you're wild camping, mountaineering, trekking, bushcrafting, prepping etc, if you're using a map you owe it to yourself to take a look at this video.

1. Watch the video.
2. Grab your map.
3. Get outside, develop new skills, push your boundaries.
