When we play horror games, we know what we signed up for. The rest of the time, we can be caught with our guard down by genre-defying scares, as in these games so unexpectedly terrifying we can never trust again so thanks for that, games. Subscribe? Beware spoilers from BioShock Infinite, Metal Gear Solid, Ecco the Dolphin and Halo 1, if that's somehow still on your unfinished pile of shame.
From creepy Watson in Sherlock Holmes: Nemesis to BioShock's eyeless Boys of Silence, to just about every goddamn thing in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, the unexpectedness of scary goings-on in ostensibly non-horror games makes them that much more psychically scarring.
