Tennis - France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will not compete in the Indian Wells Masters 1000 Series event from March 7 to 17 but the Frenchman could possibly play the Miami Masters event which runs from March 20th to March 30th. Tsonga is diagnosed with sickle cell disease, which makes him tired after long flights, according to Tennis Actu. Aware of the same, he has tried to avoid taking long flights when possible. After winning the title at the Open Sud de France, he travelled to Rotterdam by train. although the train journey was certainly longer than the flight. He was beaten by Russian Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals in Rotterdam and in the first round of the Open 13 event where he was beaten by Andrey Rublev. He also reached the semi-finals of the ATP event in Brisbane in January and the second round of the Australian Open where he was beaten by eventual champion Novak Djokovic. He has an 11-4 record for the season so far. His title in Montpellier was the 17th title of his career and his first since 2017. Tsonga is currently ranked No. 118 in the world and he could use his protected ranking for the Miami event. Tsonga can use the protected ranking on nine occasions during the year. The Frenchman is not on the list of qualifying entries, the deadline of which expired on Monday. That means, he would have to get into negotiations with IMG and James Blake, the new Tournament Director of Miami. 33-year-old Tsonga is currently 11th in the race to the season-ending Championships and would certainly be a crowd-pleaser at the Miami event. The Frenchman has been ranked as high as No. 5 in the world rankings, way back in February 2012.
