Hi, I'm Danielle, and I have always loved animals! We have so many pets that everyone calls our house ‘the zoo’. My parents thought looking after animals was a good way for me to learn responsibility, so by the time I was ten I had 3 rabbits, 3 hamsters, 2 guinea pigs, a snake, a cat named Jama, and my best friend, a Labrador called Bailey. I understood that having pets meant that eventually you would have to say goodbye, but nothing prepared me for losing my dog!

We got Bailey when I was seven. I was a shy child and got bullied at school, and my parents hoped that having Bailey would help improve my confidence and cheer me up, and hopefully get me some more friends! Having a dog meant all of those things happened, but it also gave me a bonus best friend.

We went to choose Bailey from a litter of six puppies, and he ran over to me right away, and licked my face. From the second we brought him home, we were inseparable. We would play fetch in the garden, go for walks, learn tricks, I would share my snacks with him and at night I would sneak him up into my bed.

When I was in high school I struggled a lot with the work. I hated being stuck inside and found it hard to concentrate, so I would constantly get low marks and get in trouble with the teachers. But no matter how bad my day was, Bailey would be there at the end of it, wagging his tail like he'd never been so excited to see anyone.

When I was upset because I hadn't been invited to a party, or because nobody would ask me on a date, Bailey would always be there, acting as though I was his favourite person in the whole world. It was such a good feeling to always have someone to come home to!

One day Bailey seemed a bit quiet. He was usually so loving and bubbly but that morning he was just lying under the table. I thought maybe he was sick, so I called the vet and she said I could bring him in later that day. I decided I’d take him for a walk in the meantime. We headed to the park and I threw the ball for him. No matter how sick he got, he always loved this game. He ran off to fetch it. I realised I’d thrown it a bit far so maybe he couldn’t find it. I waited a while, but he didn’t come back. I panicked!! What if he was really sick and had collapsed under a tree somewhere?! I ran around the park calling his name. I asked some other dog walkers if they’d seen him, but nobody had. I stayed out for three hours, searching and searching for him, before going home in tears. My parents and I plastered every lamppost and shop window with posters of him, begging people to bring him home, offering a large reward.

Over the next few days, I felt like my life had fallen apart. I couldn’t eat or sleep, and I missed Bailey so much! We received a few calls, but they were all either the wrong dog, or nothing was to be found when we got to the place. At first I refused to believe that he wouldn’t come back, but as the days and weeks passed, I could feel my hope dwindling.

But no matter what, even when it was pouring rain, I still went to the park every day after school to look for him. I was certain he was still out there, and just too sick to find me. I imagined he’d found a nice spot under a tree and was hiding in a pile of leaves to keep warm.
