BREXIT: "If the UK crashes out, it will NOT be EU's fault" - MEP Jim Nicholson in final EP speech

BREXIT: Northern Ireland's longest-serving MEP Jim Nicholson has said he's preparing for life outside politics after 30 years in the European Parliament.

A cloud of uncertainty still hangs over whether the United Kingdom will be compelled to take part in EU elections in May.

But with little stomach in London for such an outcome, Northern Ireland's three MEPs are living hour to hour, preparing for their own exit from Europe.

However both DUP MEP Diane Dodds and Sinn Fein's Martina Anderson said they're intent on remaining in politics once they relinquish their seats.

But after 30 years as an Ulster Unionist MEP, Mr Nicholson is looking ahead to political retirement.

He said the highlight was perhaps in 1994 when the trio sat down with European Commission president Jacques Delors to establish peace funding for Northern Ireland.

Nicholson dedicated his final speech, in the European Parliament in Straatsburg, to Brexit.
