We continue building a bushcraft saxon house in the forest with hand tools only. This time we work on building a timber frame using woodworking techniques and joinery such as mortise and tenon. We use saw, hammer, knife and axe to craft wooden pegs to secure all of the joints in place. Firstly, we had to de-bark the logs using a drawknife. We then burned the ends of the logs to preserve them for longer and help prevent rot. This is an ancient wood preserving technique called Shou Sugi Ban. Using a shovel we dug holes to put the jowl posts in place. We cut tenon joints on the top of the jowl posts and then using a hammer and chisel we cut mortises into the wall plate or horizontal support beams. We also secured the ridgepole of the house with the same technique. With the foundations and timber frame now complete, the saxon house is ready for the roof rafters. In Part 4 we will be securing the mortise and tenon joints together with wooded pegs. We will also be using the bark peeling station to create rafters for the roof. Hope you enjoy the episode! - Mike
