Hannah Holleman, assistant professor of sociology at Amherst College, joins Sam to discuss her piece in Monthly Review, 'No Empires, No Dust Bowls: Ecological Disasters and the Lessons of History.' In this piece, Holleman examines the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, an ecological crisis that drove tens of thousands of farmers from their land. In tracking how capitalist accumulation, settler-colonialism, and white supremacy contributed to the ruinous erosion of soil, Holleman spotlights the social character of these crises, building her case that in order to confront the problems wrought by climate change, we must confront the imperial system of capital itself.
