WHERE IS THE TEAM GOING?
Getting the team away from the office to focus on the next 90-days, Aaron and the Tiege Team are headed off-site for a quarterly meeting… and Aaron’s bringing you along! They’re headed to the Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. When Aaron and Kelley were in Milwaukee, they met up with Rob who immediately asked, “Where’s all the cheese?” during a rather rehearsed but humorous segment.
THE 3-DAY AGENDA
At the resort, Kelley reviews the agenda for the 3-day meeting: Day One includes lunch then an owners’ meeting followed by high level finance, marketing, and retention meetings. Day Two covers a review of all the pillars (Ops, Brand, Design, Customer Service, Marketing and Tech) as well as rocks & accomplishments since last quarterly meeting. Then Day Three focuses on goal setting for the company and customer service and experience improvements during the next 90-days.
DAY ONE
The meeting room is set-up in a U-shaped (aka horseshoe) formation with the conference tables end-to-end with one opening. The purpose of the opening is to allow presentations that are visual so that everyone can see which this style is optimal when combining both presentation and some group interactions or discussions. It is appropriate for smaller meetings like this one.
A new Tiege Team member is introduced, Toby, who is the ‘analytics’ person that ‘crunches numbers’. He loves working with Tiege Hanley and has had plenty of data to analyze and challenges to tackle. Tiege Hanley announces that they are planning to hire a Junior Level Accountant. Meetings end at 7pm when the team heads out for dinner, watching some basketball, and a few drinks.
DAY TWO
On Day Two around 6am, Aaron heads out into the quaint town near the resort. Since it’s off-season, it’s a ‘ghost town’ with no one staying at the resort but Tiege Hanley. He finds Off the Rails, a cute breakfast place, to find out it doesn’t open until 7am. After waiting for his coffee, he cranks out a 4-mile run and then grabs some more coffee. Thereafter, he heads back to Osthoff while discussing how a business is an evolution.
Aaron elaborates that entrepreneurs who are fixed on one direction aren’t operating in reality or ‘smart’ as a company needs to maintain their competitive edge. He continues by saying that Tiege Hanley is devising a way to make everyone as happy as possible, giving the example of customers being able to use Tiege Hanley how they want to use Tiege Hanley. He apologizes for being cryptic but adds that more details will be revealed in the future.
This day features a team building exercise, the Food Truck Challenge. The Tiege Team is set-up at different stations with 4-5 people per team. They have an hour-and-half to complete the challenge which consists of creating a food truck concept complete with team name, logo, and slogan for the truck as well as three menu items. Each team must prepare and present one of those menu items to be judged by a panel of judges.
Competitive juices flow! Aaron’s team is ‘Cheese Hanley’ which centers around grilled cheese sandwiches. Unfortunately for his team, time management is an issue. By the end of the challenge, the winning team is ‘Team Bruh-cshetta’ consisting of Rob, Jay, Cindy, and Kathleen.
DAY THREE
Planning sessions conclude the meeting on Day Three, and Aaron heads out to the airport with a rousing “Double Monk” farewell.
