A star Auburn gymnast broke both her legs in a NCAA competition this weekend.

Aerospace engineering student was trying to execute a handspring double front when she landed at an awkward angle on the mat causing her to fall backward on the ground.

NOLA.com reports Samantha Cerio, a 5-foot senior at Auburn University, suffered a heartbreaking injury while attempting a handspring double front on her first tumbling pass at Friday’s NCAA gymnastics regional in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She landed awkwardly during the floor routine, breaking both legs and dislocating both her knees.

At the time, reports stated she was was recovering, but now the latest updates reveal that she has decided to officially retire from the sport.

Cerio dislocated both knees and tore multiple ligaments in her legs, Auburn head gymnastics coach Jeff Graba said. She is expected to undergo surgery Monday.
