After a long wait, the Volkswagen Arteon is just about ready to reach U.S. customers' hands—which means we now know how much it costs. Its $36,840 starting price may seem high considering it's more than $10,000 higher than the Passat mid-size sedan's, but to us, the Arteon's pricing seems commensurate with its more upscale styling and feature content and its more powerful engine. The VW also lines up nicely with other premium-ish hatchback competitors such as the Kia Stinger (starting at $33,495) and Buick Regal Sportback (which starts at $25,995 but rises to the mid-$30,000s when similarly equipped). All 2019 Arteons use a 268-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four that sends power through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, with 4Motion all-wheel drive costing $1800 extra on the SE and SEL trim levels and coming standard on the top SEL Premium.
