Max Can Still Win Title
Max Verstappen sits fourth in the championship, 36 points behind leader Valtteri Bottas. Despite only finishing on the podium once in the first 4 races Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko believes that Max Verstappen is still in the hunt for the world title this season.
"Our goal is still the world title. We are still in it. Max has been sensational and so far has taken the maximum he can.”
"With a new driver, we knew it would be difficult in the constructors' championship. But Max h as scored twice as many points as in the same period of the previous year."
Hamilton “I Basically Gave P1 to Bottas”
After losing out in qualifying and following behind virtually all race, Lewis Hamilton has come out saying that he essentially gave P1 to Bottas during their opening lap battle.
“This has always been a bit of a difficult race for me. I just struggle here. There’s certain races I struggle at compared to others. I can’t really point it out. I got quicker at the end but it was too late by then. I would say a bit of an under-par performance from myself so I just need to work hard.”
“I didn’t get the job done in qualifying, he did. And in the race I was too friendly at turn one and basically gave it to him. He drove a fantastic race, made no mistakes, so he deserved the win this weekend.”
Vettel Calls Mercedes Winning Boring
Following a record season start by Mercedes with four 1-2 finishes in the first four races many fans are already concerned that we may be witnessing another Mercedes whitewash. And Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel agrees but has respect for such a dominant display.
"Boring, isn't it? So boring. It's not just four races. It has been four years, more or less. We have to work harder, work better. We are pushing as hard as we can.”
"But you need to respect that they are doing phenomenally well and getting their cars most of the time in the right place.”
On the flip side, Mercedes boss, Toto Wolff, perhaps unsurprisingly doesn’t see his team winning as boring but concedes as a fan he understands that having many different winners can be a good thing for the sport.
"I don't think it's boring. I think you look at the Formula 2 race and there are lots of incidents and safety cars, but the Formula 1 drivers race a lot more cleanly. We are talking about the best drivers in the world.”
"As a fan, I would like to see different winners and a big fight from start to finish, but I lead the Mercedes team and I do everything so that it performs as well as possible."
Mercedes Defends Against Sandbagging Claims
Mercedes, namely team boss Toto Wolff, are often accused of sandbagging and not fully showing the real performance of their cars. But Wolff has defended himself against such accusations and had the following to say:
"What can I say? We don't talk ourselves down. It's that we see a strong Ferrari on Friday and Saturday, and I still believe Charles was the fastest man on the track on Sunday.”
"But just like in Bahrain, you can now say, 'stop saying these things', but we think there are so many things we need to understand and improve even better. But Ferrari are now doing the same thing as we are: talking the other person up.”
