MOTORSPORT was in mourning just three days before F1 opened with the Australian Grand Prix. Race Director Charlie Whiting passed away on Thursday, March 14 aged just 66. What was Charlie Whiting's cause of death? Charlie Whiting died suddenly after suffering a pulmonary embolism on the morning of March 14. A pulmonary embolism is a blocked blood vessel leading to the lungs. Following his death, world champions Lewis Hamilton said: "What he did for the sport, his commitment, he really was a pillar. "I've known Charlie since I started in 2007. Obviously, I'm incredibly shocked this morning to hear the sad news. "My thoughts and prayers are with his family. May he rest in peace." And FIA president and former Ferrari team principle Jean Todt commented:"It is with immense sadness that I learned of Charlie's passing. "Charlie Whiting was a great race director, a central and inimitable figure in Formula 1 who embodied the ethics and spirit of this fantastic sport. "Formula 1 has lost a faithful friend and a charismatic ambassador in Charlie." Who will replace him as F1 Race director at the Australian Grand Prix? Whiting was responsible for track and car safety at every race since his appointment as FIA Director and Safety Delegate in 1997. But after his tragic passing, deputy Michael Masi stepped in to preside over the race. Until last year, Masi was deputy director at Supercars, but joined F1 as Formula 2 and 3 race director as well as understudy to Whiting.
