A former clerk at the DCI Headquarters sentenced to death for killing his brother and step-mother over witchcraft claims want to be released so as to be involved in his family’s property succession case.

George Ngugi Mungai, 48, told Justice Teresiah Matheka at the High Court in Nyeri that he fears losing his inheritance, if his father’s estate is distributed in his absence.

He noted that he has been in prison for 22 years and is remorseful of his actions and that he has learned several vocational courses which would assist him earn a decent living if released.

“At the prison, I have been promoted to the rank of Honoured Prisoner which is also known as Special Stage due to my good behavior and conduct. I have reconciled with the entire family and they are not opposed to my release,” said the inmate.

“I committed the offence and got jailed at the age of 26. By then, one is not experienced in life. Am remorseful and if given another chance will have a lot of wisdom. He further urged the judge to consider the motto of the Prisons Department which is Kurekebisha na haki. (Rehabilitation and Justice).

“The other prisoners need to be encouraged. They would get disappointed that an inmate is an Honoured Prisoner and is not released. I will serve as a role model. The prisons’ motto will have been achieved with my release,” he added.

He shot dead the deceased persons, Alice Njeri Mungai (step-mother) and James Kamanga Mungai (step-brother) at their home in Murang’a county in November 1998 using his friend's pistol gun.
