Huawei is Looking at Sailfish-based Aurora OS as an Alternative to Android Last month, the US government has added Huawei to the entity list which bans any US company from doing business with the China-based company. Huawei’s export ban not only includes US companies but also the companies which are using technology or services offered by the US-based partners. After Trump’s executive order, Google has revoked Huawei’s Android license. While Huawei is given 90 days reprieval period, the company has to immediately find the alternative for the Android OS.
There are rumors the HongMeng/ARK/OAK OS which the company is said to be developing from several years. Now, the latest reports suggest the company is looking at Aurora OS owned by Rostelecom, Russia’s state telecommunications company, as an alternative to Android OS. Even the same topic is said to be discussed by the Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The Aurora OS is based on open mobile platform Sailfish developed by Finnish company Jolla.
Huawei is reportedly testing the Aurora OS on few of its smartphones in Russia. Talking about the rumored HongMeng OS, it could be limited just to the Chinese market. Recently, the company also started contacting developers to publish their apps on AppGallery, Huawei ‘s alternative to the Google Play Store. Even with the smartphones running on Aurora OS, they will still support Android apps. Without Android apps, it will be highly impossible to sell smartphones.
While Huawei still got changes to stay alive in the smartphone market, it will be the end of the road for the company’s laptop business after the 90 days reprieval period. It can longer use the Intel chips or Microsoft’s Windows OS. Huawei is already seeing a huge drop in smartphone sales outside of China. If there is no outcome from the US and China trade talks, it will be a tough road ahead for the company’s consumer electronics business.
